About Monica Wells, LMHC

Your daughter is smart, funny, creative, and full of potential. But behind the scenes, life may feel much harder for her than anyone realizes.

Maybe she’s overwhelmed by school demands, melting down after holding it together all day, or feeling anxious about friendships and fitting in. Maybe she works twice as hard as everyone else just to stay afloat. As her parent, you are exhausted, worried, and wondering how to help.

If that sounds familiar, you are in the right place.

I’m Monica Wells, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and founder of The Social Mind Counseling in Huntington, New York. I specialize in helping girls, teens, and young women with ADHD, anxiety, and social struggles better understand themselves, build confidence, and develop the tools they need to thrive.

Over the years, I noticed something important. Many girls with ADHD are missed. They are often bright, verbal, sensitive, and capable, so their struggles can be overlooked. Instead of being recognized, they are labeled as lazy, dramatic, disorganized, too emotional, or anxious. Meanwhile, they are quietly working overtime just to keep up.

That is where I come in!

My approach is warm, practical, and down to earth. Therapy with me is not just sitting and talking about feelings (although super important!). I teach girls how their brains work, help them build real-life skills, and support them in practicing those tools outside of session so change actually happens.

Together we may work on:

  • Understanding ADHD

  • Understanding Anxiety

  • Emotional regulation

  • Friendship struggles and social confidence

  • Perfectionism and people pleasing

  • School stress and burnout

  • Self-esteem and identity

  • Independence for college and young adulthood

I also believe parents need support too. You are carrying a lot! I help parents better understand their daughter’s brain, reduce power struggles, and learn strategies that actually work at home. When families work with me, my hope is that things begin to feel lighter. Less chaos. Less shame. More confidence. More connection. More peace at home.

Outside of the office, I’m a real down to earth person who values humor, authenticity, and making people feel comfortable! You never need to be perfect here. Show up as you are.

Your daughter does not need to be “fixed.” She needs support, understanding, and the right tools.

And that is exactly what I love helping with!

Here are some things you can expect to gain from therapy

  • A better understanding of how your ADHD brain works

  • More confidence in who you are

  • Tools and understanding of anxiety and overthinking

  • Stronger emotional regulation skills

  • Healthier friendships and social confidence

  • Less perfectionism and self-criticism

  • Strategies to handle school stress and overwhelm

  • Better communication at home

  • Increased independence and life skills

  • A safe space where you feel understood and accepted

  • Real support from someone who truly gets girls with ADHD

Most of All...

You may begin to feel calmer, stronger, and more like yourself again.

What Therapy is Like!

I’m a little different from some therapists you may have worked with before. I pay close attention to how you learn, not just what you’re struggling with. That means I’m not only listening and supporting you, I’m also teaching you the skills and strategies that help your ADHD or anxious brains function better in real life. I’d describe myself as a skills-based therapist, because insight is important, but real change happens when you know what to do differently.

Therapy with me is relaxed, engaging, and built around helping you understand your brain, your strengths, and how to use them to your advantage. I truly believe you have strengths, even if anxiety or ADHD has made them hard to see right now.

I’m also a big believer in growth mindset and neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to change, adapt, and build new pathways. In other words, you are not stuck. You may not have the skill yet, but skills can be learned. Confidence can be built. Patterns can change.

I also bring something deeply personal to this work. Like many women, I was diagnosed with ADHD later in life. That means I understand the years of wondering why things felt harder than they seemed for everyone else. The late nights overstudying. The procrastination followed by panic. The constant self-criticism. Working twice as hard just to keep up. Feeling bright and capable, yet secretly overwhelmed. I get it, both professionally and personally!

If you decide to work with me, you’ll find someone who is easygoing, compassionate, and yes, I think I’m kind of funny! Some clients have called me “cool,” but I’ll let you decide. I genuinely love what I do, and I get excited about your progress, whether it’s something huge or a small win that no one else understands. I’ve even been known to dance in celebration when a client does something brave.

I’m excited to meet you, cheer you on, and help you build a life that feels calmer, stronger, and more like you.

Great things never come from sitting in your comfort zone!
